Jim Fergus est né à Chicago en 1950 d'une mère française et d'un père américain. Il vit dans le Colorado. Mille Femmes blanches est son premier roman, suivi de La fille sauvage. Journaliste réputé, il écrit des articles sur la gastronomie, la chasse, la pêche et la nature dans les magazines Newsweek, The Paris Review, Esquire sportmen, Outdoor Life, etc. Il est aussi l'auteur d'un ouvrage consacré à ses souvenirs de chasse, A hunter's road, déjà considéré comme un classique dans le domaine de la littérature américaine. Mille Femmes blanches a été salué par l'ensemble de la critique américaine. Hollywood a acheté les droits du livre pour en faire une adaptation.
